The Gundoo Child Care Centre Cherbourg

The Gundoo Child Care Centre is the first Child Care Centre to participate in a parent/ carer demonstrator program.

The program aims to show parents how effective they are as their child’s greatest teacher through demonstrating activities such as Art, Music, Football and Story Writing.

The Baby Hornetts Football Theme

The Gundoo Child Care staff chose a theme for 8 weeks at a time and invite parents to bring in pictures from magazines, paint on the Story Board Murals or demonstrate a physical activity with their child.

Some of the activities the Gundoo Child Care Centre are implementing include:

  • Each week the parents/ carers of the 0- 5 year olds are provided with a simple at home task such as practicing their football kicks or writing in their ABC journals with their babies.
  • The Gundoo Child Care staff practice a letter from the FITERACY Coaching method each week such as Y= Your Response to promote clapping and cheering around babies.
  • Parents are also involved in learning simple ways to observe their children’s learning and to provide responses that promote language development for their children
  • Parents are currently completing the Baby Hornets Theme which is the local Cherbourg football team with babies being involved in football kicking, sharing of footballs and writing words about football

The First Indigenous Baby Band. The Bubby Flats

Minimize
In October 2010, Gundoo Child Care Centre put together the first Indigenous Baby Band.
The Baby Band is called the Bubby Flats named after their mentors the Muddy Flats.
The Muddy Flats are Cherbourg’s own adult band who have grand children in the Bubby Flats band.

The Muddy Flats mentor their babies in the first Indigenous Baby Band Concert

The Muddy Flats are supporters of the concept of adults role modelling and demonstrating positive healthy activities such as playing music, reading and doing physical activity with children.
The Bubby Flats now play regular GIGS to the Cherbourg nursing home and visit the library once per month to gather books on sport and music.

In May 2010 over 100 Cherbourg residents attended the launch of the Bubby Flats in a concert in the park with the Muddy Flats leading the Bubby Flats in their first songs.
