On July 10th 2010, the latest practice reflections of the Kidfit FITERACY programs were presented at the Whole Language Umbrella Summer Literacies Conference.
The presentation was a Peer Reviewed presentation outlining the use of the FITERACY program in 2 settings.
The 2 settings were the Indigenous child care centre, Gundoo Child Care Centre in Cherbourg QLD and the Parent/ Carer baby teams in the Deception Bay/ Redcliffe/ Sunshine Coast Areas.
The program aimed to assist parents with becoming great teachers for their children in the early childhood learning years and to create strong partnerships between parent/ carers and the people that work in the child health/ education settings.
Results found that after 4 weeks parents/ carers and childcare staff were applying daily routines to demonstrate activities that promoted health, creative pursuits and literacy activities.
After 12 weeks parents/ carers and childcare staff were able to witness the effects of these routines on their babies or the babies in their care.
These effects included:
- Feeling closely bonded to babies
- A greater understanding the effects of demonstrating creativity, literacy and physical activity in front of babies
- Babies and Toddlers mimicking their parent/ carers actions in exercise, music and literacy activities
